History
of IBA, Karachi:
The
Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi-South Asia’s premier
business school established in 1955 with initial logistical and curricular
support from the Wharton School of France, University of Pennsylvania and the
University of Southern California, is the oldest business school outside of
North America. The IBA has maintained the high standards and academic
traditions inherited from Wharton and USC, while adapting and adjusting these
to our local context. As part of the Institute’s academic expansion, we
recently launched a broad-based, interdisciplinary degree-program in the
Social Sciences & Liberal Arts, with undergraduate majors in Media &
Communications, Political Sciences and Psychology.
Position
Requirements:
The
Institute of Business Administration’s Department of Social Sciences &
Liberal Arts invites applications from qualified academics at all ranks
(Lecturer, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor or Professor) for
full-time positions in the fields listed above. The ranks at which candidates
are appointed are assessed in accordance with the criteria established by the
Higher Education Commission, Pakistan. Applicants should have PhDs in hand or
in progress, broad knowledge of their fields of expertise, understanding of
interdisciplinary approaches to the social sciences and demonstrated
commitment to research and publication. Previous teaching experience
preferred, but not required.
Salient
Features of IBA’s Academic Environment:
The
following details summarize salient features of IBA’s academic environment
and pedagogical approach.
Faculty
members are encouraged to present papers at national and international
conferences. IBA provides financial support to facilitate conference
registrations and travel. Faculty members are also encouraged to attend short
and longer-term training programs/seminars relevant to their fields of
research. IBA has a separate budget specifically for this purpose.
Faculty
members may also teach courses at the IBA-Center for Executive Education
(CEE), for which they receive separate remuneration. The CEE offers short and
long-term training to business professionals throughout Pakistan.
Faculty
members are encouraged to consult with professional organizations in Pakistan
and abroad. Any compensation received for such work is shared with IBA 70:30,
with the major portion retained by the individual faculty member.
Faculty
members engaged in extended research projects may apply for sabbaticals.
IBA
offers generous relocation allowances and faculty housing to facilitate those
successful candidates who live outside Karachi.
In
addition to the standard benefits for all employees — earned leave and
medical insurance (hospitalization for self, spouse, children and parents) —
IBA has recently introduced long-term benefits, such as Gratuity, Provident
Fund and Group Life Insurance.
We
have established a Center for Business and Economics Research (CBER) which
provides opportunities for faculty members to take part in contract research
for which they are compensated, in addition to their salaries. Faculty
members who are awarded research grants retain 70% of the net earnings and
pay 30% to IBA. In addition, competitive funding is available for research
projects.
Faculty
members engaged in research projects or in writing case studies assume
reduced teaching loads.
